HIROAKI SUEYASU AND KIDILL’S FALL-WINTER 2024 COLLECTION PAYS TRIBUTE TO JAMIE REID AND PROPELS PUNK’S SPIRIT INTO THE FUTURE

The passing of Jamie Reid in August 2023 marked a significant loss for the art world, especially for those connected to the punk movement and the Fall-Winter 2020 collaboration with Hiroaki Sueyasu, Kidill’s artistic director. Sueyasu expressed deep sadness at the unexpected departure of someone he considered a starting point in his artistic journey, emphasizing the void left behind by the loss of a stranger who portrayed him.

Despite the departure of key figures from the early punk era, Sueyasu recognized the duty to preserve the essence of punk that has influenced contemporary society. He declared that even though these figures are no longer physically present, their influence and the essence of punk are eternal. Sueyasu asserted that it is the responsibility of those in the present to ensure that punk’s spirit remains alive.

Sueyasu reflected on the risk of stylized beauty becoming mere iconography, consumed and reduced to formality over time. However, he expressed confidence that stylized beauty can absorb the diversity of contemporary trends and persist into the future while staying relevant in the present. The central theme of the Fall-Winter 2024 collection is not about destruction or denial, but the positive energy generated by those who continue to reboot the punk movement.

The KIDILL collection for this season is an exploration of the intersection between early punk classicism and modern design. Sueyasu integrated DIY-inspired embellishments, prints, and jacquard weaves crafted by Japanese artisans. The collection features a mix of classic punk elements such as excessive destructs, revived FOSTEXGARMENTS MA-1s, ripped denim, and vintage-washed cut-and-sewns, t-shirts, and tops.

The message behind this season’s KIDILL collection is rooted in the half-century history of punk, emphasizing its unchanging identity and attitude. Sueyasu highlights that punk is no longer limited to a specific group of people and has evolved into a spirit of protest and rebellion that influences a modern, independent culture. Punk has become a value system that respects individuality through freedom and expression. Sueyasu’s return to the roots represents a channeling of punk’s origins, proclaiming the rebirth and renewal of KIDILL. He emphasizes that despite changes, his initial impulse and resistance remain the same, keeping the brand grounded in simplicity.
