Highlighting Fashion’s Creative Pulse: ASVOFF 2024 Explores Style, Storytelling, and Cultural Themes
From November 7 to 10, Paris will once again host A Shaded View on Fashion Film (ASVOFF), the celebrated fashion film festival founded by fashion icon Diane Pernet. Now in its 16th year, ASVOFF has become a central event for fashion films in France. Spotlighting boundary-pushing creativity and innovative visual storytelling. Held at L’École des Arts Joailliers, this year’s edition is filled with an eclectic lineup of screenings, talks, and events to attract fashionistas, filmmakers, and cultural enthusiasts from around the world.
Since its launch in 2008, ASVOFF has established itself as a key platform for the genre of fashion film, a unique blend of high fashion and cinematic storytelling. Over the years, the Festival has screened works from both celebrated and emerging filmmakers, all exploring themes of identity, beauty, and the ever-evolving landscape of fashion.
One of this edition’s highlights is Jury Chair, Michèle Lamy, Rick Owens‘ muse and creative partner. Lamy brings her distinct vision to the jury, joined by a remarkable team: German costume designer Bina Daigeler, producer Fanny Fragu, director Matt Lambert, American actor Harry Goaz, and the punk rock band Fecal Matter. This eclectic mix of judges ensures that the festival’s awards will celebrate innovation, creativity, and boldness in fashion film.
HONORING FASHION ICONS
The Festival opens with a screening of Quant, Sadie Frost’s documentary honoring Mary Quant, the legendary British designer credited with popularizing the miniskirt. But the festival’s nostalgia trip begins even before the official start. Festival-goers can first enjoy Fashioned Out, a 2002 film commissioned by Galeries Lafayette, offering a throwback to the fashion scenes of Paris, Milan, New York, and London in the early 2000s.
Additional documentaries set to illuminate the event include Happy Clothes by Michael Selditch, which reveals the creative process of famed costume designer Patricia Field, known for her iconic work on Sex and the City, Emily in Paris, and The Devil Wears Prada. Another standout, Siberian Dream by Janet Paxton Gardner, follows Irina Pantaeva’s journey from the icy landscapes of Siberia to the runways of Paris and New York, painting a vivid portrait of resilience and transformation.
Furthermore, this edition will introduce eight new categories delving into timely topics, including mental health in fashion, AI-generated films, the Queer Archive, and the rise of Chinese fashion films. It will conclude with a grand ceremony where two prestigious awards will be presented: one for excellence in film writing and the other for the most daring and innovative ideas in fashion film.
Finally, ASVOFF is an immersive look into the world of fashion film as well as an invitation to experience fashion as an art form in its own right. For anyone passionate about fashion films, ASVOFF 16 is a not-to-miss cultural highlight.
