In a testament to three decades of artistic brilliance, Bruno Catalano, the visionary sculptor, presents an exclusive masterpiece for Galeries Bartoux’s 30th-anniversary celebration. This unique sculpture, based on the iconic “Voyage à New York“ Benoît model, stands as a synthesis of Catalano’s renowned traveler’s signature in de-structured bronze and his latest exploration in mirror-polished bronze.
Classically, sculptures invite viewers to explore from every angle, but “Voyage à New-York” challenges this norm. In a full-length portrait of a contemporary young man with Greco-Roman facial features, Catalano disrupts expectations. The artist deliberately smooths one side of the sculpture, showcasing only the mirror-polished bronze when viewed from the front and three-quarters. This innovative approach transforms the piece into a reflective canvas, engaging observers in a dynamic interplay of light and movement.
Rather than unveiling the character through facial expressions, the sculpture keeps the silhouette anonymous. It becomes a mirror, reflecting the world around it—capturing the gaze of onlookers, shadows passing over its surface, and the very movement of the walking man it portrays. Catalano’s audacious departure from convention breathes new life into the traditional concept of sculpture.
Catalano’s bold amalgamation of sculptural finesse with a gesture of absolute abandon challenges the viewer. The sculpture, in turning its back on the public’s gaze, initiates a self-reflective dialogue. It prompts observers to contemplate not only the artwork itself but also their role as witnesses to the artistic expression. In this act of defiance against conventional expectations, Catalano invites the audience to reconsider their perspectives on art and introspection.
MONUMENTAL PRESENCE ON PARK AVENUE
As part of the celebration, nine monumental sculptures by Catalano will grace the prestigious Park Avenue. The exhibition, opening on May 18, 2024, will introduce the monumental version of “Voyage à New York” (3 meters) for the first time, promising an awe-inspiring showcase of Catalano’s artistic evolution.
In a parallel unveiling, Galeries Bartoux announces the relocation of its New York gallery from Central Park to the iconic Soho district. The new gallery at 114 Wooster Street is set to open its doors on January 22nd, 2024, marking a significant chapter in Galeries Bartoux’s global presence.
