CHANEL’S NEW CRUISE COLLECTION WAS UNVEILED TUESDAY THROUGH A VIDEO SHOT IN THE CARRIÈRES DE LUMIÈRES IN LES BAUX-DE-PROVENCE, SOUTH OF FRANCE. FOR THIS NEW COLLECTION, VIRGINIE VIARD, CHANEL’S CREATIVE DIRECTOR, GOT HER INSPIRATION FROM COCO CHANEL’S LIFE, AND MORE PRECISELY FROM HER FRIENDSHIP WITH THE POET, PLAYWRIGHT AND FILMMAKER JEAN COCTEAU.

It is no coincidence that the video was shot at the Carrières de Lumières, the place where Cocteau had shot several sequences of his Testament of Orpheus in 1959. This film is precisely what inspired this collection: “It’s poetic, strong, simple and so exact. It made me want a very neat collection, in black and white, with a lot of contrast and punk accents.”, as Virginie Viard explained herself. In this unique collection, there are many references to the two friends’ common obsessions – tarot cards, astrology, symbolism and the celebration of bodies. The video juggles between black and white and color shots, echoing the filmmaker’s works and creating an absolutely captivating effect. From bangs, leather, pearls and sequins, to embroidery and patterns, Chanel showcases a modern and rock collection, in line with its time and yet transcending it to the fullest.

In addition to being astonishing, the collection is also eco-responsible. The show displayed for the first time the famous suits of the house in a tweed created by the embroiderer Lesage, made from around 70% of recycled fibers and certified by the GOTS label (Global Organic Textile Standard). It ended in the open air with a glorious launch of white doves, symbol of peace and loyalty, and followed by a vibrant concert of various female artists – Charlotte Casiraghi, Vanessa Paradis, Juliette Armanet and Angèle.
