ALEXANDER MCQUEEN AND SARAH BURTON FASHION SHOW ON A LONDON ROOFTOP: A VISUAL FASHION STORM PROMISING A LOOK FORWARD TO THE GOOD TIMES OF THE POST-PANDEMIC ERA.
Alexander McQueen & Sarah Burton‘s collection was presented, last Monday, October 11, under a giant custom-made transparent dome, on the top floor of a parking lot in the Wapping district, London, and under a sky dotted with cumulus clouds, which served as the inspiration for this Spring-Summer 2022 collection.
This is the brand’s first show since March 2020. In Paris, where Sarah Burton had then presented a series of Modern-day Heroines, halfway between Mary Stuart and Calypso, in bursts of rift and crystal.
“Our studio is located in the Clerkenwell neighborhood, in London. The balcony looks out to the sky – rain, storm or shine. Recently we went to explore the mud of the Thames; this time I looked up to the sky, which is why my models look like storm chasers. I like the idea that you don’t know what the day will bring, that you have to be brave and face it,” Sarah Burton explained after the show.

This season Sarah Burton loosened up her silhouette, imagining zippered dresses with multiple gathers, cut in prints of morning clouds, blue skies or twilight.
The British designer alternated shouldered jackets with floor-length pants, before returning to one of her favorite visual puns, the Janus coat, a two-sided garment – double-breasted Prince of Wales in the front, and polyfaille with a twist in the back.
All the models emerged from a hidden staircase on the circular pinewood podium. The first one wore a double-breasted wool coat with jigging sleeves, very low-cut to better reveal a huge tattoo of black thistle that went up along his neck. The show ended with a series of sequin-embroidered sheath dresses that mimicked rain – virtuoso and punk haute couture, supported by a few black tulle-trimmed jackets adorned with crystals in the shape of drops of water.
