Tomorrow’s Wardrobe Rethinks Fashion for a Greener Future

December 20, 2024 Fashion Exhibition – London

Step into a future where fashion leads the way toward a greener, more thoughtful planet. Tomorrow’s Wardrobe, an exhibition at the Design Museum in London, brings together some of the most innovative minds in the fashion industry—from Stella McCartney to Phoebe English, Ahluwalia to Vivobarefoot. This showcase is an exploration of how we design, produce, and wear, rethinking every step of the process.

The fashion and textile industry, often celebrated for its creativity and economic impact, carries an undeniable environmental burden. The journey of a garment, from textile production on farms to factory floors and eventually to our closets, leaves a significant mark. It contributes to material waste, water pollution, and ecological degradation while often relying on exploitative labor practices. With annual garment production doubling since 2000 and expected to rise by another 60% by 2030, the urgency for change has never been clearer.

Tomorrow’s Wardrobe highlights groundbreaking research and forward-thinking design from across the UK. The exhibition invites you to explore a world where technology showcases tools and methods that could define the future of fashion. From robotic arms and artificial intelligence to upcycling and recycling. The display bridges high-tech solutions with low-tech craftsmanship. Digital IDs enable garment tracking, while innovations in fabric recycling reimagine how materials are reused.

Moving through fabric landscapes, design studios, and individual garments, the exhibition offers a glimpse into a future shaped by ingenuity and sustainability. It serves as a testament to what’s possible when creativity and environmental consciousness go hand in hand.

Driving Fashion’s Green Transition

Curated by Future Observatory, the Design Museum’s national research program for the green transition, Tomorrow’s Wardrobe inspires hope. To bring this vision to life, Future Observatory partnered with the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Together, they assembled a team of curatorial advisors, including Kate Goldsworthy (UAL), Jalaj Hora (Nike), and Susan Postlethwaite (Manchester Metropolitan University). Their collaboration ensures a diverse and impactful perspective on sustainable fashion.

Through the works of pioneering designers such as Pūnda, Salomon, Ranra, and others, Tomorrow’s Wardrobe makes a bold statement. It underscores that sustainability in fashion is not just a possibility—it’s a necessity. Moreover, the exhibition challenges visitors to reflect on their own wardrobes and daily choices. By doing so, it pushes for a collective shift toward mindful consumption.
