MODE 2.021 ANVERS – MODE/ENGAGÉ.E” IS THE AMBITIOUS REOPENING PROGRAM LAUNCHED BY MoMu – ANTWERP’S FASHION MUSEUM IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CITY OF ANVERS AND VISITFLANDERS.

From the opening weekend that happened on September 4 and 5, 2021 until the end of January 2022, Belgium’s renowned MoMu hosts a series of fascinating exhibitions, open-air projects, themed walks and varied activities. The central focus of all these events is the global transition and the significant changes occurring in the world of fashion.

MoMu’s director and project curator Kaat Debo explains: “Our aim is to open the MoMu to a wide public by presenting it as a fashion hub and meeting place that offers as broad a panorama of the discipline as possible, i.e. that includes its social aspect. The museum has been renovated and its reopening is the highlight of the project, since it focuses on the major changes of today and tomorrow. The title ‘Mode/Engagé.e’ can be read in various ways. It addresses anyone, from the amateur to the convinced fashionista. It evokes a concern for sustainability and awareness, in terms of environmental protection at a time where the industry is becoming more and more digitalized.

E/MOTION : MODE EN TRANSITION (FASHION IN MOTION)

In what ways does fashion reflect emotions such as anxiety and desire that drive us as a society? How can the fashion industry reinvent itself and what role can designers play? Since the 1990s, fashion has been in constant dialogue with society’s major movements – sometimes even anticipating them. E/MOTION explores the social, political and psychological changes of the past three decades and assesses their impact on fashion.

A NEW EXHIBITION HALL FOR THE PERMANENT COLLECTION

With the new presentation of its collection, the MoMu is opening further to the public by providing year-round access to vibrant spaces. Visitors will appreciate this new feature, as in the past the museum was only able to show a small portion of its large collection of more than 35,000 pieces due to a lack of space. The newly renovated building that counts 800 m² of additional space will allow the museum to stand as a permanent home to the history of Belgium and the world of fashion.

TALENTED DESIGNERS

The campaign for the opening program ‘Fashion 2.021 Antwerp – Fashion/Engaged’ consists of series of powerful images that are intended to arouse emotions and trigger essential social debates. The series was created with the help of seven designers, including well-known names such as Walter Van Beirendonck and Raf Simons, along with up-and-coming talents such as Glenn Martens, Marine Serre, BOTTER and Supriya Lele.
