Outlaws: Celebrating 80s London’s Fashion Renegades and Their Iconic Influence
November 7, 2024. Fashion Exhibition
The Fashion and Textile Museum in London is currently hosting “Outlaws: Fashion Renegades of 80s London,” an exhibition that delves into the vibrant and rebellious fashion scene of 1980s London. Running from October 4, 2024, to March 9, 2025, the exhibition centers around the legendary nightclub Taboo, opened by designer and performance artist Leigh Bowery in 1985.
Taboo was renowned for its extravagant dress code, encouraging patrons to “dress as though your life depends on it, or don’t bother.” This ethos fostered a creative community that included fashion designers BodyMap, Rachel Auburn, John Crancher, Pam Hogg, dancer Michael Clark, and pop star Boy George. Their collective influence extended beyond the club scene, impacting fashion, art, and popular culture.
Outlaws: Fashion Renegades of 80s London Exhibition showcases original garments and accessories from Leigh Bowery and over thirty designers, featuring custom-made pieces from private collections and rare items from designers such as John Galliano, John Flett, Stephen Linard, and Dean Bright. Additionally, it includes photography, film, and artworks that capture the anarchic energy of the era, highlighting how the night’s creativity spilled over into daytime experimentation.
