PACO RABANNE AND SELFRIDGES BRING TOGETHER THE FRENCH BRAND’S ORIGINAL CONCEPT OF 12 UNWEARABLE DRESSES TO A NEW AUDIENCE

Selfridges and Parisian fashion house Paco Rabanne launched an NFTs collection of 12 unwearable dresses, selected from Paco Rabanne’s most conceptual archive pieces, offering an unprecedented opportunity for early adopters and fashion collectors to virtually own and wear a historic garment that transcends time.

This initiative is part of an effort to raise awareness of Paco Rabanne’s heritage, while boldly entering new virtual worlds. The Selfridges project represents an important milestone in the brand’s cultural chronology. A book and an exhibition are also planned to celebrate it.

These pieces span 30 years of Paco Rabanne’s history. Among them, are a sleeveless wooden beaded apron dress in pastel colors from the Spring-Summer 1970 season, an haute couture dress assembled from reflective CDs from Spring-Summer 1988, and a cosmic tutu in silver metal and transparent plastic from the Fall-Winter 1996 season.

The dresses are available in the Selfridges flagship, via a screen installed in an immersive space that also features optical art by Victor Vasarely. There are also pieces from the Spring-Summer 2022 collection, for which Julien Dossena was inspired by the artist.

Purchases can be made using a traditional credit card for those who do not have a crypto-currency wallet; a custodial wallet is then created using a Level 2 blockchain framework.

Paco Rabanne offers different levels of exclusivity for these 12 creations: one of the pieces was edited in 56 copies, while two outfits are available in only two copies. The latter have been “faithfully recreated using the same techniques as in the past,” and include a Spring-Summer 1969 haute couture cape, composed of 5,600 Plexiglas sparkles and assembled with 10,000 metal rings – 200 hours of work in the workshop – as well as a metallic black Fall 1990 top, miniskirt and “Samurai” headpiece, featuring more than 5,000 beads reproduced from the original mold.

All pieces will be offered as part of an exclusive experience including an invitation to Paris to attend the show and participate in a fitting of each dress.
