Buckingham Palace Honors the Queen’s Centennial With a Major Fashion Retrospective

August 18, 2025- Queen Elizabeth II Exhibition, Buckingham Palace, London

For seventy years, Queen Elizabeth II reigned as Britain’s longest-serving monarch and a defining style icon. Her wardrobe shaped diplomacy, set traditions, and inspired designers worldwide. From her 1947 wedding dress by Sir Norman Hartnell to pastel coats and signature hats, every look carried meaning.

This story now returns to the spotlight. In spring 2026, Buckingham Palace opens the exhibition “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” to honor her centenary. The show features over 200 gowns, jewels, shoes, and accessories. Many appear in public for the first time, presenting an intimate view of a monarch who influenced fashion as much as history.

A Life Told Through Fashion

The “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” Exhibition unfolds at The King’s Gallery, presenting iconic gowns, ceremonial robes, and ensembles from milestone events. You will see looks from her Silver and Golden Jubilees, state occasions, and the outfits that shaped her public image.

Then, the focus turns more intimate. You will encounter her riding jackets, tartan skirts from Balmoral, silk scarves, and pastel ensembles that defined her later years. Accessories complete the story. Her rectangular handbags, carried at 85 and instantly popularized, show how Elizabeth influenced fashion even in her final decade.

Together, the collection reveals her dual identity. As sovereign, she embodied tradition and continuity. As a woman, she embraced subtle modernity, weaving personal taste into duty. The “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” Exhibition captures this balance, framing her life as both history and style, stitched into Britain’s cultural fabric.

A Legacy in Print

The exhibition will be accompanied by the official publication “Queen Elizabeth II: Fashion and Style”. Written by curator Caroline de Guitaut, with contributions from leading fashion experts, the book explores her archive in unprecedented depth. It highlights the craftsmanship behind each garment and her role in sustaining Britain’s couture industry.

As de Guitaut explains: “Only now, as the late Queen’s fashion archive comes under the care of Royal Collection Trust, can we tell the story of a lifetime of thoughtful style choices – from her hands-on role to the exceptional craftsmanship behind each garment.”
