From Global Partnerships to Innovative Programs, Discover How the Festival is Shaping the Future of Arab Cinema and International Storytelling.

In just a few short years, the Red Sea International Film Festival (Red Sea IFF) has transformed from a regional event into a player on the global film circuit. Its rapid rise has been fueled by strategic partnerships, high-profile projects, and a commitment to fostering cultural exchange, establishing it as a key force in both the Arab and international film industries.

Through initiatives such as the Red Sea Fund, the Festival has become a driving force behind the production and development of groundbreaking films. This gave Arab and African filmmakers a global stage to showcase their work. At the same time, its involvement in high-profile international projects reflects its growing influence beyond the region.

STRATEGIC PRESENCE, PROJECTS AND PARTNERSHIPS

A key driver behind Red Sea IFF’s growing presence has been its active participation in major global film festivals. From Hollywood to Cannes and Venice. The Festival has consistently promoted its vision of supporting Arab and international filmmakers. By forming alliances with global industry leaders, Red Sea IFF ensures its films and filmmakers gain international exposure. These partnerships help showcase them at the world’s most prestigious film events.

At the 2023 Venice Film Festival, the Red Sea Fund supported six films, including “Aïcha” and “Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo.” Featured in the Orizzonti and Giornate degli Autori sections. The Fund also played a crucial role in the Final Cut program, offering post-production support to filmmakers from the Middle East and Africa. This involvement has enhanced the Festival’s reputation as a key supporter of underrepresented cinema.

The Fund’s influence reached films like Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” starring Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz. It also backed Johnny Depp’s “Jeanne du Barry,” which opened the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Additionally, Will Smith’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” became Saudi Arabia’s highest-grossing film. Most recently, Johnny Depp’s “Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness” received a standing ovation at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Supported by the Red Sea Film Foundation.

INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS ELEVATING ARAB CINEMA

At its core, Red Sea IFF is dedicated to promoting Arab cinema and nurturing emerging regional talent. The Arab Shorts Competition is one of the Festival’s flagship initiatives. It has become a vital platform for Arab filmmakers to showcase their work on the international stage.

This year’s Arab Shorts Competition features 15 films from Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Egypt, Kuwait, and Lebanon. These films explore themes of identity, belonging, cultural heritage, and social issues. Notable entries include “Fragments of Life” by Anis Ben Dali and “Saint Rose” by Zayn Alexandre. Both films showcase the diversity and richness of Arab storytelling.

Since its inception, the Arab Shorts Competition has screened over 120 films. It has become an essential program for discovering new voices in Arab cinema. The Festival’s commitment to providing a platform for these filmmakers helps Arab cinema gain traction in global markets.
