This exhibition at the Gagosian gallery in Gstaad presents sixteen of Simon Hantaï’s iconic “dernier atelier” (the last studio) paintings, created between 1982 and 1985. These works, characterized by their vibrant abstract forms, utilize Hantaï’s signature pliage technique, combining folding and dripping to reveal striking alternations between pigment and reserve. Curated by Anne Baldassari, the show offers an intimate look into the artist’s prolific period of withdrawal from public life, during which he explored themes of boundlessness through depth, building upon his 2022 retrospective at Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris. Accompanying the exhibition are historic photographs by Édouard Boubat, providing unique insights into the development and chronology of Hantaï’s works from his last studio.
