La Samaritaine, the Parisian department store owned by LVMH, has undergone a magnificent transformation. And it’s all thanks to Charlie Le Mindu, the renowned hair artist who has adorned the historic staircase with a monumental work of art made entirely of hair.
For the first time since its construction in 1870, the staircase has become the canvas for an evolving and intriguing installation as part of the “Paris à poil(s)” exhibit. The work is a celebration of the diversity of hair on our planet, showcasing various colors, textures, and shapes. And it’s not just any hair – Charlie and his team have meticulously prepared a mix of flame-retardant synthetic and vegetable fibers, such as flax, hemp, and banana leaves.
The clusters of hair will remain in their original form until March 14, when colorful flowers and grasses will be added to signify the arrival of spring. From April 12, Charlie and his team of students will come to style and braid the strands (outside of opening hours), while a “harvest” will take place from May 2 to 9. This means that the installation will be dismantled so that customers can take home a piece of it, in the form of a key ring or jewelry, for example.
But Charlie Le Mindu’s installation is not the only impressive feature of the exhibit. The department store is also home to dense animations in the windows and on certain walkways. Visitors can marvel at several hair outfits designed by Charlie himself, as well as wigs inspired by celebrities that are suspended from the ceiling, releasing a musical and olfactory signature.
And the fun doesn’t stop there! On two weekends, dancers dressed in furry costumes will come to stroll through the department store, creating an unforgettable experience for all.
Charlie Le Mindu’s work at La Samaritaine is not just a celebration of hair – it’s a celebration of art, innovation, and sustainability. The deconstruction of the installation is a smart way to recycle the materials, giving customers a chance to take home a piece of this magnificent work of art. La Samaritaine has truly adorned herself with hair in the most stunning way possible.
