Rahul Mishra‘s FW 23/23 Haute Couture Collection ‘We, The People’ showcases a harmonious blend of contemporary fashion and meticulous handwork. Designed in India for the global stage, this collection reflects the brand’s commitment to creating unique pieces that blur the boundaries between art and fashion. Drawing inspiration from Master Erté‘s creative prowess, the collection emanates an elegant and festive vibe while highlighting the atelier’s dedication to preserving cultural traditions.
‘We, The People’ is the embodiment of the collective dream of Rahul Mishra’s team, which includes designers, embroiderers, tailors, and others. Each individual contributes to the common objective, forming a complex organism within the atelier. This commitment to recognizing and honoring community contributions aligns with the brand’s founding aim of cultural preservation. Furthermore, the collection highlights the brand’s efforts to promote reverse migration, relocating needlework artisans from urban industries to their local communities in Indian villages. By empowering and involving its employees, the brand finds joy in the design process and nurtures the soul of Rahul Mishra’s Couture.
At the heart of the collection are the master artisans who have been working alongside Rahul Mishra since the inception of his socially conscious fashion house. These artisans, dedicated to their craft, contributed to the exceptional artistry seen throughout the collection. Mishra wanted to give them pride of place, highlighting their skills and actively including them in the creation process. Some of the garments featured intricate embroidery that concealed minuscule figures of the artisans themselves, forming a touching tribute to their contributions. Mishra takes great pride in the fact that reverse migration has begun, with craftsmen returning to their local Indian villages to build new communities and preserve traditional crafts.
The ‘We, The People’ collection showcases Rahul Mishra’s signature flamboyance and intricate detailing. The silhouettes, loosely inspired by the Art Nouveau drawings of Russian-French artist Erté, exude grace and elongation. The collection alternates between overblown volumes, such as gravity-defying petals, bows, and girandoles, and slender shapes like short bustier dresses, catsuits, and midriff-baring tops paired with loose trousers. While Mishra describes his tailored pantsuits as having “straightforward simplicity,” the true allure lies in the dazzling decorations and uninterrupted sequined shine that adorns every surface. This opulent display exudes a joyous excess and exuberance, representing the uncontainable passion for creation.
Mishra’s collection was made possible with the support of various collaborators. Tanishq, the Jewelry Partner, added an exquisite touch to the ensembles, complementing Mishra’s designs. The show’s artistic direction and styling were skillfully handled by Lejenke, while the casting director, production team, hair and makeup artists, and floral installation specialists all contributed to creating a mesmerizing showcase of craftsmanship and artistry.
