Inside The Louvre-Lens New Exhibition: “The Art of Dressing: Dressing Like an Artist

March 27, 2025- Art & Fashion Exhibition, Louvre-Lens, “The Art of Dressing: Dressing Like an Artist”

At the crossroads of creativity, fashion, and art have long mirrored, influenced, and redefined one another. The Louvre-Lens, a satellite of the famed Louvre in Paris, delves into this dynamic relationship with its latest exhibition, The Art of Dressing: Dressing Like an Artist. Running from March 26 through July 21, the show explores the profound dialogue between artists and their attire, as well as the evolution of clothing from mere fabric to a medium of artistic expression.

Fashion as an Artistic Statement

Clothing has always played a role in shaping artistic identity. Whether it’s a painter’s ink-stained smock, a sculptor’s utilitarian jumpsuit, or a designer’s couture creation inspired by a masterpiece, attire speaks volumes. The exhibition brings together over 200 pieces—from paintings and sculptures to garments and accessories—demonstrating how artists have used fashion as both a personal and professional statement.

Some of the most striking pieces include Rembrandt’s self-portraits, where his evolving wardrobe reflects his journey from an ambitious youth to a world-weary master. Equally compelling is the presence of Salvador Dalí’s surreal veston aphrodisiaque, adorned with tiny glasses of green liqueur, blending fashion with performance art. The exhibition also features works by Niki de Saint Phalle, Sonia Delaunay, and Leonor Fini—visionary artists who blurred the lines between clothing and canvas.

From Antiquity to the Runway

The influence of historical dress on artists is another key theme of the exhibition. From the flowing togas of neoclassical painters to the severe black suits of 19th-century bourgeois artists, attire has always been a statement of belonging—or rebellion. The show highlights how artists like Eugène Delacroix and Edgar Degas used clothing to position themselves within (or outside) societal norms.

The exhibition also explores how artists inspired fashion. Yves Saint Laurent’s groundbreaking designs—such as the Mondrian dress and the Van Gogh “Sunflowers” jacket—pay homage to visual artists, proving that the exchange between art and fashion is a two-way street. Three of Saint Laurent’s most iconic art-inspired looks, including one referencing Cubist master Georges Braque, are among the exhibition’s highlights.
