Château Capbern is a beautiful property that extends over 38 hectares. In the north of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, the vineyard is remarkably situated on the hilltops overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its gravelly hilltops formed on a limestone base allow for excellent water drainage.
This remarkable natural drainage, combined with the nature of the soils, allows the vine to withstand the hot summers perfectly and to give the best of itself. The immediate vicinity of the Gironde River allows for exceptional natural air conditioning.
In 2010, a new vat room and aging cellars were created for Château Capbern, in the heart of the village of Saint-Estèphe. The vat room is composed of 37 vats of different capacities in order to make a parcel-by-parcel selection. The cylindrical vats are insulated and thermo-regulated in the wall. The particular configuration of the vat room allows making the feeding of the grapes by direct gravity in the vats. Vintage 2017.
The 2017 vintage was marked by a constant earliness throughout the year. The fall of 2016 and spring of 2017 were relatively dry with above-average temperature sums resulting in a two-week advance on the first day of harvest (compared to the last 5 years). The Gironde estuary played a major role in protecting the vineyards from the frosts of late April. In spite of very hot and dry periods, the hydric constraints remained relatively moderate ensuring an optimal maturation of the grapes.
The clays of the Calon terroir were once again able to fully play their role as water regulators. The first two weeks of September, punctuated by a few days of rain, put this vintage back into a classic Bordeaux oceanic context. The Merlots were picked from September 15 to 2, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc from September 25 to 29, the Petit Verdot on September 29. This vintage offers wines of great aromatic freshness, a touch of great delicacy in the mouth brought by silky and refined tannins.
