THE EXHIBITION
The exceptional new series of paintings by Damien Hirst will be presented at the Foundation Cartier in Paris from June 1, 2021 to January 2, 2022. Hirst describes his works as “The Cherry Blossoms speak of beauty, life and death. They are excessive – almost vulgar…They are ornamental but painted from life…The Cherry Blossoms are flashy, messy and fragile, and thanks to them, I have moved away from minimalism to return with enthusiasm to the spontaneity of the pictorial gesture.”
The Cherry Blossoms Series reinterprets with joyful irony the traditional and popular subject of the notorious flowers. On the canvas, Damien Hirst mixes thick strokes of paint and bright colors that reference impressionism and pointillism, when small dots are used to form an image. Action painting is also used as seen through the dribbles and splashes of paint on the canvas. Hirst paints on massive canvases, which are entirely covered by bright and saturated colors that envelop the viewer into the vast landscape. It oscillates between figuration and abstraction as the cherry blossoms go from realistic to careless-looking. The complete series includes 107 canvases divided into single panels, diptychs, triptychs, quadriptychs and even a hexaptych, all in wide-ranging format.
The French exhibition, which was shaped in response to an invitation from Hervé Chandès, the Cartier Foundations general director, to Damien Hirst during a meeting in London in 2019 presents 30 paintings that they chose together. The exhibition will be presented in Jean Nouvel‘s space and is the perfect host for the vibrant canvases and jubilant colors.
DAMIEN HIRST
Damien Steven Hirst, known as Damien Hirst, was born on June 7, 1965 in Bristol. Hirst is famous for his installations that confront the viewer with the relationship between art, life and death. The controversial artist had his first solo exhibition at the Woodstock Street Gallery in 1991. In 1995, he was awarded the Turner Prize. Damien Hirst became known worldwide with his “Natural History” series: a collection of whole or cut-up animals displayed in formaldehyde-filled aquariums. Damien Hirst opened his own gallery in October 2015, the Newport Street Gallery in South London, and is now known worldwide for his distinctive and complex works.
