THE 74TH EDITION OF CANNES FILM FESTIVAL PROMISES TO BE SPECTACULAR – FROM JULY 6 TO JULY 17, 2021.

THE FESTIVAL

The 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is the most awaited film event of the year. A year ago, the mythical ceremony had to be cancelled due to the sanitary crisis. This year thankfully, it is set to take place from July 6 to July 17, 2021 at the beautiful Palais des Festival. Culture is back for good, and the festival will be the ideal opportunity to bring back to the spotlight (literally) the somewhat forgotten artists.

This year, the actor, director and screenwriter Spike Lee will have the honor of being the President of the Jury, an opportunity he accepted in 2020 and promised to honor when the event would be held in person again. This year, the ceremony will be a little different: there is some doubt about the presence of foreign parties at the event, and we can expect to see the combination of glitter and masks on the red carpet.

A VERY FRENCH SELECTION

On June 3, 2021, Pierre Lescure and Thierry Frémaux presented this year’s official selection at the UGC Normandie in Paris. Annette, a musical by Leos Carax starring Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver, was revealed as the opening film of the event. As for the selection, it turns out to be very French: a total of seven French films in competition, a genuine record:

  • Annette by Leos Carax (opening movie)
  • Tout s’est bien passé by François Ozon
  • Titane by Julia Ducournau
  • France by Bruno Dumont
  • Les Olympiades by Jacques Audiard
  • Les intranquilles by Joachim Lafosse
  • La fracture by Catherine Corsini

Other international movies nominated include The French Dispatch by Wes Anderson, Flag Day by Sean Penn, Memoria by Apichatpong Weerasethakul or Tre Piani by the italian Nanni Moretti, among others.

THE GUEST OF HONOR

This year, the festival will honor Jodie Foster, who will receive a Palme d’honneur for her “brilliant artistic career” as well as her “rare personality” during the opening ceremony, July 6, 2021 on the stage of the Palais des festivals. “Cannes is a festival to which I owe so much, it has totally changed my life. Presenting one of my films here has always been a dream of mine. I had the chance to do achieve it, several times.” she stated in an interview. It is worth noting that seven of her films have been presented at Cannes, whether she directed them or played a role in them – which means that her lifelong dream did come true.
