Torabhaig (pronounced “Toravèg”), the Isle of Skye’s second-largest distillery, is finally revealing its very first peated single malt. Named Torabhaig Legacy Series 2017, from a batch distilled in early 2017 and bottled at 46% vol, the inaugural batch is limited to just 3,600 bottles for the French market. A historic moment for the Isle of Skye, which sees the birth of the second official distillery ever erected on the island for the first time in 190 years. A second reference, Allt Gleann, will be unveiled in the summer of 2021.

Retail price: 59 € Distilled in small copper pot stills, the first batch 2017 Legacy Series brings together a small hundred barrels. Torabhaig produces a peaty distillate, one of the most phenolic in Scotland. A thousand nuances are revealed, shaped by brewing, fermentation, distillation and multiple small details, until the perfect balance between finesse and character is found. For the peaty notes, so powerful and so easily identifiable, conceal treasures of complexity if one takes the trouble to work them with delicacy.

THERE HAD NOT BEEN A NEW WHISKY ON SKYE FOR 190 YEARS!
Torabhaig, the new distillery of Skye In 2017, when it lit its stills in an old farmhouse on the southeastern tip of Skye, in the Sleat Peninsula, one of the mythical cradles of scotch, the Torabhaig distillery intended to pick up the torch of a very old history. A boldness that bears fruit five years later, since, in February 2021, fans will finally discover its inaugural vintage: 2017 The Legacy Series. In choosing this mythical island to build its latest, Mossburn Distillers – Torabhaig’s parent company – first looked for the perfect site: the village of Teangue on the Sound of Sleat, the strait that separates the southeast coast from the Scottish mainland.
Could anyone have imagined a more incredible challenge than bringing the second official distillery ever built on the Isle of Skye into the 21st century? For four years, passionate craftsmen worked to rehabilitate the historic building whose magnificent stone came from the ruins of nearby Camus Castle (Caisteal Chamuis in Gaelic). In January 2017, finally, the distillery comes to life. With a removable pagoda roof to accommodate some of the equipment, it houses at its heart a mash tun capable of brewing 1.5 tons of malt, 8 Douglas fir fermentation tanks where powdered yeast activates the mash for about 72 hours, and a pair of copper pot stills named Sir Iain and Lady Noble after the couple who once owned the land and farm. Torabhaig whiskey is matured in oak casks, mostly in old bourbon barrels, to preserve great subtlety, and occasionally in sherry hogsheads, French virgin oak barrels.
