Alaïa’s London Café and Bookstore: A Space for Creativity, Culture, and Connection
December 20, 2024 Retail- London
At Alaïa’s London flagship, a new world unfolds above New Bond Street. Hidden on the third floor, a café and bookstore draw inspiration from Azzedine Alaïa’s legendary warmth and hospitality. This intimate space invites you to step into the spirit of the designer’s personal salons, where culture, creativity, and conversation blend effortlessly.
Azzedine Alaïa’s hospitality was nothing short of legendary. At his Paris atelier on rue de Moussy, his kitchen table was the heart of impromptu gatherings. From supermodels to artists, musicians, and writers, everyone was welcome. The atmosphere was warm, inviting, and full of friendship. His loyal Saint Bernard, Didine, wandered through the room, adding a touch of home. “There was always an extra set of cutlery in case someone showed up unexpectedly hungry,” Azzedine Alaïa once said. His words perfectly captured his generous spirit and love for sharing.
Alaïa’s London Café Experience
This spirit of hospitality lives on in the new café and bookstore in London. Designed by Pieter Mulier, the Creative Director of Alaïa, the space invites cultural exchange and connection. At its heart is a central aluminum table, encouraging guests to engage with one another.
The café partners with Violet Cakes, the bakery run by Claire Ptak, known for her famous lemon and elderflower wedding cake made for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Ptak’s creations are rooted in her Californian background and her time spent at the renowned Chez Panisse in Berkeley. She infuses her pastries with the same creativity that the Alaïa brand is known for. “Violet has long served as a place to linger and create, always inspired by art and fashion,” Alaïa explains. The bakery’s role in the space is clear. In this space, you can enjoy delicious pastries while soaking in the café’s art-filled surroundings.
Alongside the café is the bookstore curated by Claire de Rouen. This London-based store has long been a haven for rare and specialized books in art, photography, and fashion. The collection of books available in the café’s cozy, library-like space is carefully selected by Mulier in collaboration with Claire de Rouen. The space invites you to linger, explore the books, and reflect, much like a traditional reading room.
A New Chapter in Experiential Retail
The opening of this café and bookstore marks an important moment for Alaïa, extending its presence into lifestyle and cultural spaces. This addition creates a space where the Alaïa ethos—hospitality, warmth, and connection—can thrive. The space is also a natural continuation of Mulier’s vision to bring a “modern beauty” to the brand.
The flagship store, with its sleek modernist design and contemporary art displays by artists such as Sarah Lucas, Sterling Ruby, and Marc Newson, now integrates fashion and art. It’s a clear departure from traditional luxury retail spaces, offering a place to experience the brand in a deeper, more personal way.
Alaïa’s new London café and bookstore also reflect a broader trend in luxury retail, where brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Dior are creating immersive, experiential spaces to connect with customers on a more emotional and cultural level. This café and bookstore addition is a perfect example of how the brand is evolving beyond fashion to offer something far more engaging.
Located above the flagship store at 139 New Bond Street, this new chapter in Alaïa’s story highlights the growing importance of experiential retail in the luxury fashion world, where shopping is more about living the brand and being part of something greater.
