Gucci Unveils “Gucci Bamboo: Decoding an Icon” in Shanghai
April 1, 2025 – ‘Gucci Bamboo: Decoding an Icon’ Exhibition, Shanghai, China

Shanghai’s Sunke Villa—a mansion steeped in history—has been transformed into a bamboo sanctuary. Step inside, and the world outside fades. Shadows of swaying stalks dance on the walls, a soft rustling hums in the background, and the scent of polished leather lingers in the air. Here, Gucci is weaving a story of resilience, reinvention, and luxury that bends with time.
‘Gucci Bamboo: Decoding an Icon’, curated by 2050+, is a deep dive into the heritage of the Gucci Bamboo 1947 bag, an icon shaped by post-war ingenuity and now reimagined for a new era.

When Guccio Gucci’s artisans first heated and bent bamboo over an open flame in 1947, they wanted to craft a symbol. Italy, still reeling from wartime shortages, had to find luxury in unexpected places. Bamboo, strong yet supple, became the answer. It was sculpted into a signature curve, polished to perfection, and paired with the house’s finest leather.
Decades later, that same process endures. In the ‘Anatomy of a Bag’ room, Gucci’s Florence-based artisans are projected onto sleek screens, their hands repeating the time-honored ritual: heat, shape, cool, polish. The result? A timeless object, both artisanal and avant-garde.

Bamboo as a Muse
Beyond its craftsmanship, bamboo holds a profound cultural significance—especially in China, where it symbolizes humility, nobility, and perseverance. Gucci’s exhibition explores how this unassuming material has evolved from a natural element into a medium of artistic expression.
In ‘The Whispering Grove,’ bamboo transforms into an immersive digital landscape. AI-generated visuals by artist Christian Kondić breathe life into the organic patterns, blurring the line between nature and technology, tradition and future.
Further into the exhibition, artist Sybil Montet uses CGI to reimagine Gucci’s silk scarf motifs. While Francesco D’Abbraccio (aka Lorem) presents a generative AI installation that envisions the Bamboo 1947 bag in a constant state of evolution—a metaphor for Gucci itself.

As luxury houses increasingly mine their archives, Gucci projects its heritage into the future. Under the vision of its creative leaders, the Gucci Bamboo 1947 bag has been reinterpreted time and again, yet its signature handle remains untouched.
With ‘Gucci Bamboo: Decoding an Icon,’ the house invites you to see bamboo as a philosophy—one that bends, adapts, and endures, just like Gucci itself.
