For six centuries, Palazzo Donà Giovannelli stood at the confluence of two canals in Cannaregio and received no guests. Built in 1436 by Filippo Calendario, the architect behind the Doge's Palace, it housed the Duke of Urbino, the Donà and Giovannelli families, and the Ninth Congress of Italian Scientists. Giovanni Battista Meduna, the man who restored Ca' d'Oro and La Fenice, gave it its Neo-Gothic grandeur and Baroque interiors in the 19th century.
