Tod's Turns the Gommino Into a Collector's Object With Four Masters of Italian Design

Tod's Gommino has been an Italian classic since 1979. A driving shoe born from the same obsession with craft that embodies the country's greatest design objects. This Milan Design Week, Tod's made that connection explicit. Icons by Icons, presented at Via Savona 56 in the heart of Milan's Tortona district, placed four limited edition Gommino loafers in direct dialogue with four landmarks of 20th-century Italian design. A genuine conversation between two disciplines that have always shared the same values: precision, beauty, and the primacy of the handmade.

Tod's Translates Four Design Legends Into Leather

The four loafers land in a unisex format, conceived as collector's items. The first draws from Joe Colombo's Elda armchair. Its fluid and futuristic lines translated into a structured, enveloping rendition in tan leather. The second channels the free and expressive language of Gaetano Pesce's Crosby chair, with cutouts on the upper in the shape of a smiling emoji and multicolored Gommino pebbles. The third takes the radical geometry of Michele De Lucchi's Kristall side table for Memphis Milano, its iconic Fantastic pattern erupting across a laced-up loafer in bold checkerboard. The fourth distils the essential purity of the Brionvega RR226 radiofonografo by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni into a dotted iteration where every element has a precise reason for being.

The Exhibition path at Via Savona 56 unfolded as a series of four encounters. At each stop, the original design piece sat alongside its corresponding Gommino. The conversation between furniture and footwear, between the 1960s and now, built naturally from room to room. Throughout the week, Tod's artisans performed live hand-stitching demonstrations, the signature gesture that has always defined the Gommino and that connects, in one continuous thread, a loafer to a chair to a radio to a table. All of it, unmistakably, Italian.
