Located in the Vallée de Chevreuse, approximately 45 minutes southwest of Paris, L’Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay occupies a former 12th-century Cistercian abbey set within the Yvelines countryside. The site has long been shaped by successive uses, from monastic life to private ownership, before evolving into a hospitality destination.

After its dissolution during the French Revolution, the abbey passed through several hands, including the Rothschild family in the early 20th century. It has operated as a hotel since 1989 and now functions under the management of Paris Society, whose approach emphasizes spatial coherence and atmosphere rather than reinvention.

    Architecture and Interiors

The property comprises 147 rooms and suites designed by Cordélia de Castellane. Interiors preserve the diversity of the existing architecture rather than imposing uniformity. Original woodwork, period details, and structural elements have been retained and complemented with custom furnishings, antiques, and archival fabrics.

Rooms are distributed across the abbey and the former Haras buildings, with several independent pavilions offering greater privacy. Among them, La Pagode stands apart. Positioned directly on the lake, it introduces a distinct architectural language inspired by Japanese design and functions as a secluded residence within the estate.

L’Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay operates as a self-contained environment rather than a conventional hotel. Families are accommodated through a dedicated Kids Club developed in collaboration with Tartine et Chocolat. Activities are structured but optional, overseen by the on-site Bureau des Sports, and include equestrian pursuits, rowing, archery, yoga, and outdoor exploration across the surrounding landscape.

    Dining and Social Spaces

The estate includes six bars and restaurants, each integrated into a specific architectural setting. Les Chasses, located in the former Rothschild hunting lodge, focuses on classic French cuisine. Le Réfectoire des Moines and L’Auberge offer more informal dining options, while La Trattoria introduces a Mediterranean counterpoint.

Rather than positioning dining as a destination in itself, the culinary offering supports extended stays and daily life on the estate.

    Wellness and Landscape

Wellness at L’Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay is shaped by scale and setting. The spa partners with Tata Harper, integrating plant-based treatments into a broader natural context that includes an 80-hectare park, wooded paths, and a fishing pond.

A working farm and equestrian facilities further anchor the property in its rural environment, reinforcing the connection between the site and its surroundings.

A Contemporary Use of a Historic Site

Today, L’Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay functions less as a destination hotel and more as a contained landscape shaped by architecture, history, and time. Its appeal lies in continuity rather than transformation, offering a considered approach to hospitality that respects the depth and complexity of the site.
