Fondazione Dries Van Noten Venice Hosts "The Only True Protest Is Beauty"

Phil Ochs wrote it in the 1960s, when the world felt like it was coming apart at the seams: "In such ugly times, the only true protest is beauty." Dries Van Noten read that line and built a foundation around it.

On view from April 25, “The Only True Protest Is Beauty” takes over Fondazione Dries Van Noten in Venice, set inside Palazzo Pisani Moretta, one of the Grand Canal’s most extraordinary private palaces. Curated by Dries Van Noten with Geert Bruloot, the Exhibition brings together more than 200 works spanning fashion, jewelry, art, collectible design, photography, glass, ceramics, and material experimentation.

It unfolds across 20 intuitively composed rooms, from the ground floor through two Piano Nobile levels of the palazzo. What makes it compelling is harder to pin down. A dialogue between objects, architecture, and the act of making itself.

Beauty as Provocation

Ochs was a songwriter and a political activist whose songs became protest anthems of the 1960s. And Van Noten's reading of his line is precise and deliberate. Beauty here is a charged encounter, an unexpected harmony, a subtle disturbance capable of unsettling assumptions and creating space for something new.

The presentation moves beyond conventional disciplinary borders. Fashion archive pieces from established Maisons sit alongside contemporary textile works. Collectible art and design objects coexist with experimental works by both independent creatives and artists represented by internationally renowned galleries. Traditional craftsmanship is showcased alongside innovative international voices. And the effect is cumulative. Each room builds on the last. Each object responds to the next. And the Palazzo itself, its ceilings, frescoes and ornamental details accumulated over five centuries, becomes an active participant in every conversation.

200 Objects, 20 Rooms, One Palazzo

Palazzo Pisani Moretta is one of the great Gothic palaces of Venice, its facades reflected in the waters of the Grand Canal, its interiors layered with centuries of decoration and history. And Van Noten and Bruloot have used every inch of it. As visitors move from the ground floor through the two Piano Nobile levels, over 200 objects resonate with the architecture around them, forming interactions that unfold with rhythm and intuition. Affinities emerge. Contrasts ripple through space. The tension between mastery and discovery, between reflection and provocation, runs through every room. Making, the presentation argues, is not a fixed act. It is an ongoing process of inquiry, encounter and discovery.
