Loewe Turns 180: Meet the Amazona 180 and the Anniversary Capsule Collection

Loewe celebrates 180 years in 2026. Founded in Madrid in 1846, the Maison holds the title of second oldest luxury fashion house in the world. To mark the occasion, Creative Directors Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez channeled the Maison's DNA into a capsule collection that speaks directly to what Loewe does better than anyone else. Exceptional leather. Playful spirit. Craft that rewards a closer look.

The Capsule launches alongside a campaign shot by Talia Chetrit, featuring Julia Garner, Sissy Spacek, Salma Abu Deif, Giselle, Kara Wai and artist Kara Walker, each carrying key pieces from the drop. An animated short film narrated by Antonio Banderas retraces the Maison's history from its origins as a small leather workshop on the streets of Madrid. The rest of the celebration lives in the Collection itself.

The Lion Takes Over

Loewe means lion in German. For the 180th anniversary, the Maison handed the lion to British artist David Shrigley. known for his deliberately naïve, humorous drawings of animals. His interpretation of the motif runs through the entire Collection, appearing as beaded embroidery on the Flamenco, leather intarsio pressed into the Puzzle, the Amazona and the Hammock, and hidden inside bag linings. Charms in mink, shearling and crochet carry the same reference. The treatment is a different craft. Collectively they read as a Maison comfortable enough with its own history to play with it.

The Amazona 180

The Amazona arrived in 1975, the year Spain entered its transition to democracy. The bag became a symbol of the confidence and independence of a new generation of Spanish women. Fifty years on, McCollough and Hernandez reimagine it for their first Loewe anniversary, softening the proportions, loosening the silhouette and introducing supple materials that shift the bag from structured work companion to something more fluid. The lion intarsio, a technique in which contrasting leathers are cut and pressed into the surface, runs across several versions. The Mini Lion Fringed Cut in nappa lambskin introduces fringe detailing as a further craft element. The Medium version in soft calfskin sits at the top of the range, the fullest expression of where McCollough and Hernandez are taking the Maison.

The 180 Years of Craft Publication

Accompanying the drop, Loewe Magazine issue 11 publishes a special edition titled 180 Years of Craft, available free of charge from June 15 in Loewe stores and partner bookstores. The Publication explores rare pieces from the Maison's archives, introduce a look inside the Madrid atelier and revisits the cultural context surrounding the original Amazona in 1970s Spain.
