Flamboyant, Joana Vasconcelos’ Latest Exhibition at Liria Palace in Madrid
March 1, 2025 – Vasconcelos Brings Flamboyant Contemporary Art exhibition at Liria Palace in Madrid

At the heart of Madrid, where centuries of Spanish aristocracy have shaped culture and art, a new dialogue is unfolding. From February 14 to July 31, 2025, the House of Alba Foundation presents Flamboyant, a monumental exhibition by Joana Vasconcelos, one of the most compelling figures in contemporary art.
Set within the Liria Palace, a landmark of 18th-century neoclassical grandeur, Vasconcelos’ works transform the private halls and rarely seen spaces of the residence. She creates an unprecedented encounter between the past and the avant-garde. Unlike her previous interventions in Versailles, the Uffizi, or Ajuda Palace, this marks the first time she brings her vision to an inhabited palace, where art and life coexist in an intimate, ever-evolving narrative.
A Living Dialogue Between Heritage and Experimentation
Joana Vasconcelos’ artistic world is one of monumentality, contrast, and reinvention. Her signature use of textiles, ceramics, and everyday materials reshapes notions of luxury and femininity, merging them with heritage and power. At Liria Palace, she invites you into an experience where the great masters—Velázquez, Goya, Titian—share space with her audacious reinterpretations.
The Duke of Alba, Carlos Fitz-James Stuart, whose lineage has long championed the arts, sees this exhibition as a natural progression of his family’s legacy:
“It is practically a duty to open the house to contemporary art with one of the world’s leading artists. Here, the portraits of my ancestors—signed by Goya, Titian, Rubens—coexist with the unexpected, powerful work of Joana Vasconcelos.”
For Vasconcelos, this is an artistic intervention. Her works inhabit and engage with its essence. redefining its grandeur through a contemporary lens. From the chapel and music room to the palace gardens, over forty of her pieces unfold in dynamic conversation with the spaces, history, and personalities that have shaped Liria Palace.
Flamboyant Exhibition also marks a significant partnership with Dior, a house that has collaborated with Vasconcelos for over a decade. Among the highlights is her reinterpretation of J’Adore Miss Dior, a piece that encapsulates her feminine, extravagant, and boundary-defying aesthetic.
Reimagining Liria Palace for a New Era
Liria Palace, built under Ventura Rodríguez, has stood as a symbol of aristocratic refinement since the 18th century. Once a private sanctuary, it opened its doors to the public in 2019, offering glimpses into the House of Alba’s exceptional art, architecture, and personal legacy.
Now, Vasconcelos’ daring visual language breathes new life into these historic halls, blurring the lines between heritage and contemporary expression. As she describes it:
“Liria Palace is a repository of history. It is a living space that adapts to contemporary contexts while preserving its essence.”
With Flamboyant, Vasconcelos reshapes how we experience art. As past and present collide, Liria Palace becomes a stage for an evolving narrative—one where tradition meets radical imagination, and where history is not just preserved but redefined.
