Milan Fashion Week: At Prada SS27, Nothing Is Just a Skirt

This Milan Fashion Week, Prada took one of the most familiar pieces in a woman’s wardrobe and played with its power. For Prada SS27, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons devoted all 63 looks to the skirt, moving through minis, pleats, A-lines, sheer layers, crystal embroidery, crinoline, Re-Nylon, ciré, and cotton treated to resemble leather or suede. The premise sounded simple. The result was anything but.

The skirt has long belonged to Prada’s vocabulary, most famously through the Waist Down exhibition of the early 2000s. This season, its allure shifted constantly. One look was prim, the next deliberately awkward, another sensual enough to expose the body above it. The styling kept changing the mood without losing the collection’s point of view.

Bare Skin, Crystals, and Prada Eccentricity

“Keep the top pared back and let the skirt command the look” could have summed up the runway. Bare bras, fine knits, and crisp shirts created a restrained counterpoint to all the drama below the waist. That contrast gave the collection its most desirable jeu de proportions: simplicity above, excess below.

Texture did much of the seduction. Crystal guipure shimmered against sheer layers, while ciré and Re-Nylon brought a colder, more technical finish. Floral prints and bows softened the harder materials, yet Prada never let the femininity slip into prettiness. Ribbons met latex. Exposed underwear sat beneath crystal work. Coated cotton cut through the romance.

Black, white, camel, khaki, soft neutrals, plaid, florals, and sharper flashes of color appeared throughout the collection, allowing transparency, shine, and matière to take the lead. Matte fabrics sat against gloss. Delicate surfaces met industrial finishes. That tension gave the looks their unmistakable Prada edge.

Prada’s Front Row

Prada’s own circle was firmly represented. Hunter Schafer, Maya Hawke, Sadie Sink, and Benedetta Porcaroli, all current Prada ambassadors, joined the front row, bringing together some of the maison’s most visible faces across film and fashion.

The guest list widened with Uma Thurman, Naomi Watts, Michelle Williams, Emilia Clarke, Alexa Chung, and filmmaker Luca Guadagnino. Outside, the crowd skewed notably younger and more international, with Korean celebrities and Asian fans gathering in force. That energy sat perfectly in step with Prada’s current cultural reach across fashion, film, and pop culture.
