Stéphane Rolland Spring 2026 Haute Couture Transforms the Cirque d'Hiver Into a Surrealist Circus Dream

The Cirque d'Hiver Bouglione has played host to Picasso, Cocteau, and Lifar. On Tuesday evening, it welcomed Stéphane Rolland, and Brigitte Macron.

France's First Lady stood backstage alongside Oscar-winning filmmaker Claude Lelouch, both swept into the couturier's fantasia. "Quel honneur de voir un tel rêve se réaliser," Macron remarked. She was not alone in feeling the weight of the moment.

Rolland titled the collection Parade, a direct nod to the 1917 Ballets Russes production for which Picasso designed the curtain—acrobats, harlequins, the saltimbanques of his Rose Period. If the ghost of Picasso lingered anywhere in the room, it was in the silhouettes: sculptural, expressionist, unapologetically Parisian.

Eight black-clad ringmasters escorted models around the sawdust circle and up onto the music kiosk, where they posed like performers awaiting their cue. The soundtrack, a melancholic Send in the Clowns, underscored the tension between spectacle and longing.

Rolland's atelier demonstrated its mastery of movement. Spectacular trousers flowed like liquid. Bubble skirts caught air. Tunics exploded in tubular beads, crystals, and strass—constellations sewn by hand. The designer played with the season's topiary cone silhouette, then pivoted: where Dior ends a dress, Rolland finished in sarouel pants. The result was sculpture you could walk in.

Headpieces borrowed from antiquity and avant-garde alike. Egyptian status cones, gilded and monumental, sat low on brows. Thorn crowns, so massive they evoked the bronzes of Antony Gormley, framed faces with neither piety nor pain, just presence. Then came the finale.

Adriana Karembeu emerged in a grand ivory gown, its scale and stillness bringing her companion Marc Lavoine to tears. Beside him sat Brigitte Macron, watching as the model completed her procession. Moments later, an acrobat took the ring, defying gravity inside a cloud of Rolland's tulle, a dress in motion, mid-flight, utterly weightless.

The final looks arrived on amazons of dazzling opulence: golden silk, metallic violet, and a black technical organza crinoline so vast it hadn't been seen in Paris since another century.

If Picasso were alive to paint this scene, the harlequins, the acrobats, the architecturally undone glamour of it all, he would have recognized the lineage immediately.
