The Exhibitions, Foundations And Artists' Homes Open On The Côte d'Azur This Season
Artists have been coming to the Côte d'Azur for 150 years, and most of them never left. Renoir died in Cagnes. Matisse built his chapel in Vence. Picasso worked out of a castle in Antibes, and Bacon kept returning to Monaco. Today, their homes, studios and chapels stand alongside private foundations, contemporary spaces and museums that program their strongest work for the summer months.
This summer season, the Prince's Palace unveils Grace Kelly's wedding archives, seventy years on. The Fondation Maeght hands its galleries to Ellsworth Kelly. Matisse converses with Yves Saint Laurent in Nice, and a Belle Époque palace on Cap-Ferrat lights nine gardens by candlelight. Monaco Unseals Grace Kelly's Wedding Archives

On April 12, 1956, Hollywood star Grace Kelly arrived in Monaco aboard the ocean liner Constitution. Off the coast of the Principality, Prince Rainier III welcomed America's biggest movie star from his yacht Deo Juvante II. On April 19, the ceremony made history. Broadcast live on television, among the very first in the small screen's history, and filmed in color Cinemascope, the wedding captivated the whole world. In a single ceremony, European monarchy met American spectacle. Seventy years later, the Prince's Palace unveils "Wedding of the Century", an Exhibition housed in the Grand Apartments. Inside, discover the behind-the-scenes stories of that legendary week, along with material the Grimaldi family never shared with the public. The gowns and accessories worn during the festivities. The wedding gifts sent from around the world, personal documents, photographs and moving images bringing back the key figures who made the week happen.
Monaco Celebrates 130 Years Of The Automobile

The Principality's love affair with the automobile started in 1893, and the Grimaldi Forum retraces all 130 years of it. More than 50 vehicles fill the space, surrounded by rare archives, photographs and film footage. Among them, the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith that carried Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III in 1956. Then come the historic Monte-Carlo Rally machines and the Formula One cars that made the Principality a motorsport capital, along with a tribute to Charles Leclerc. Finally, the MONA LUNA rover, designed to drive on the Moon by 2030.
Francis Bacon And Peter Beard Reunite In Monaco

Francis Bacon kept returning to Monaco to live, work and lose at the tables. The Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation, keeper of over 3,000 pieces from his world including the largest collection of his early paintings, dedicates its summer to the friendship between Bacon and American photographer Peter Beard, two artists bound by a lifelong fascination with African wildlife. Visits happen by appointment only. Write ahead, mention your interest precisely, and treat the visit like the private audience it is.
Arne Quinze And Joana Vasconcelos Storm A Fortress In Villefranche

Above the old town of Villefranche-sur-Mer, the 16th-century Citadelle surrenders to "The Absurd and the Dream", until October 31. Belgian sculptor Arne Quinze and Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos fill the ramparts with monumental sculpture, immersive installations and sound, a dreamlike takeover in the spirit of Jean Cocteau, who painted his own fishermen's chapel minutes away at the port. Come by sea. The fortress reads best from the water, and so does the whole bay.
Matisse Meets Yves Saint Laurent In Nice

In the hills of Cimiez, Musée Matisse stages the season's great fashion conversation. "Matisse – Yves Saint Laurent: Beauty, Fashion and Happiness", mounted with the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris, gathers more than 160 works, paintings, haute couture, drawings and archives, tracing how the painter's color fed the couturier's line, until September 28. Fifteen minutes downhill, the Chagall Museum answers with "Chagall at Work", an intimate look inside the artist's process, until September 21, staged in the museum Chagall designed around his own Biblical Message cycle.
Villa Ephrussi De Rothschild Lights Its Gardens By Candlelight

On the crest of Cap-Ferrat, Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild's rose colored palace performs its summer ritual: the Nocturnes, July 13 through August 25. After dark, candlelight washes over the villa's nine themed gardens while live music, dance and gourmet picnic evenings unfold above the Bay of Villefranche. The baroness filled her home with porcelain, tapestries and old masters collected with terrifying precision. She would have approved of the guest list. Book the evening, arrive by boat if you can, and let the Salon de Thé Béatrice handle the sunset.
Harumi Klossowska De Rola Meets Ancient Greece At Villa Kérylos

At the turn of the last century, archaeologist Théodore Reinach built himself an ancient Greek noble house on the water at Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Every frescoe, mosaic and piece of furniture recreates classical Greece, wrapped in Belle Époque luxury. This summer, Harumi Klossowska de Rola answers it. Daughter of Balthus and Setsuko Ideta, the Swiss artist sets her sculpted creatures and jewellery designs against Reinach's dream, where classical mythology, nature and craftsmanship meet. Meanwhile, the villa opens after dark all season, with open-air cinema evenings and late-night visits.
Hervé Di Rosa Takes Over La Malmaison

On the Croisette, inside a 19th-century pavilion, La Malmaison hands its walls to Hervé Di Rosa. The French artist co-founded Figuration Libre in the 1980s, and forty years later his work still refuses to behave. The exhibition gathers painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing and tapestry, drawn from comics, graffiti, popular culture and decades of travel. Bold, playful, instantly recognizable. Best of all, it stands steps from the Carlton and the Martinez.
FAMM Celebrates The Women Who Made Art History

In the winding village of Mougins, collector Christian Levett's FAMM stands as Europe's first museum devoted entirely to female artists. Nearly 100 works by 90 names run from Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt through Frida Kahlo, Louise Bourgeois and Joan Mitchell to Tracey Emin, Nan Goldin and Cecily Brown. Two years after opening, it remains the coast's most quietly radical address, and the strongest argument for lunching in Mougins instead of Cannes.
Michel Verjux Projects Light Through Picasso's Castle

In 1946, Pablo Picasso worked inside the medieval Château Grimaldi and left much of what he made to the city. Today, the Picasso Museum occupies those same rooms, holding monumental paintings, drawings, permanent installations and an extensive ceramics collection. This summer, Michel Verjux adds his own layer, projecting sculptural light across the architecture until September 27. Afterwards, head out to the terrace, where sculptures by Germaine Richier and Joan Miró stand against the Mediterranean.
Inside Hartung And Bergman's Antibes Villa

In the 1960s, Hans Hartung and Anna-Eva Bergman designed themselves a modernist villa in an olive grove above Antibes. They lived there, worked there, and planted the garden they had imagined for years. Today, the Fondation Hartung-Bergman keeps the property exactly as they left it. Wander through both studios. Discover the large scale works still in place. Then explore the garden that gave them their creative paradise. This summer, the foundation reframes their art through the words written about it: alongside paintings, drawings and prints, the exhibition traces six decades of criticism, revealing how writers and curators shaped their place in art history.

Faithful to its rank as the Riviera's modern art temple, the Fondation Maeght claims the season's most important show. Ellsworth Kelly traces, for the first time, how water and shifting light shaped the American master's abstraction. From the Côte d'Azur to New York and the Caribbean, on view until November 15. Between the Giacometti courtyard and the Miró labyrinth of Josep Lluís Sert's hillside masterpiece, a second show rewards the fashion eye: photographer Peter Knapp's images of André Courrèges' 1965 revolution, until November 8. Afterwards, descend into the village for lunch at La Colombe d'Or, where Picasso, Matisse and Calder once settled their bills in artwork, and their paintings still watch over the terrace.
American Minimalism Lands At Fondation CAB

Halfway between the village and the Fondation Maeght sits the address most visitors drive straight past. Fondation CAB is a Belgian private foundation devoted to minimal and conceptual art. Installed in a 1950s building that Charles Zana renovated completely. This summer, curator Gregory Lang stages "Abstract Constructions", pairing two generations of American work. On one side, Nassos Daphnis, pioneer of Hard Edge painting, represented by Leo Castelli for forty years, his canvases spanning the late fifties to the nineties. On the other, Rita McBride, whose sculptures, installations and tapestries reproduce television calibration patterns as abstract decoration. Afterwards, the garden looks out over Cap d'Antibes, a demountable Jean Prouvé house sits on the grounds, and the SOL café serves lunch among Charlotte Perriand furniture and citrus trees. Four guest rooms come with the property, should the afternoon run long.
