Guccio Gucci was a bellboy at The Savoy in London when he first understood what luxury meant. Watching guests arrive with their trunks and cases, he saw something worth building. He returned to Florence, opened a leather goods store on Via della Vigna Nuova in 1921, and started what would become one of the most recognizable fashion houses in the world. One hundred and five years later, Demna walked into the Chiostri di San Simpliciano in Milan's Brera district and asked a question worth sitting with: what does a century of Gucci actually look like?
The answer is Gucci Memoria. This Milan Design Week, Gucci's Creative Director unveiled his first Fuorisalone as a sequence of twelve monumental tapestries, a botanical garden, and a set of vending machines that crack open with a sound that echoes off medieval stone. It is the most talked-about installation of the week. And it is pure Demna: high and low, sincere and irreverent, a joke that is always in on itself.
Gucci Weaves One Century Into Twelve Tapestries
Tapestry is a Florentine craft tradition. Demna chose it deliberately. The twelve tapestries suspended across the cloisters of San Simpliciano read at first glance like Renaissance paintings. Look closer and they become a chronicle. Guccio Gucci at The Savoy. The founding of the first Florentine boutique. The birth of the Bamboo 1947 and Jackie 1961 bags. The volcanic eras of Tom Ford, Frida Giannini, Alessandro Michele, and Sabato De Sarno. A fifth tapestry lingers on the dynasty tensions of the 1970s and 80s, with cloudy skies gathering behind scenes of rapid expansion. This is not hagiography. It is a reckoning.
The final tapestry turns the lens on Demna himself, sitting on a gaming chair in the Gucci studio in Florence, applying finishing touches to the red coat from his La Famiglia collection. A meta-touch that sums up his entire approach. During the opening, he watched guests' reactions from an arcade in the cloister, clearly delighted to see them searching for every hidden reference.
A Garden, a Vending Machine, and a Pre-Launch
The large cloister opens into a botanical installation of specially cultivated seasonal flowers, inspired by the iconic Flora motif designed by Vittorio Accornero in 1966. Memory and reinvention growing side by side. In the small cloister, vending machines dispense canned drinks from Gucci Giardino, the house's café and cocktail bar in Piazza della Signoria, Florence. Playful, collectible, and unmistakably Demna.
To mark Gucci Memoria, Gucci released a selection of Flora motif bags and accessories through a dedicated pre-launch in Milan, available from April 16th at boutiques on Via Montenapoleone, Galleria, Rinascente, and Malpensa. A wider distribution, including the Giglio and Jackie 1961 models in the Flora motif, follows at a later date.
