24 Velvet Figures in an Avant-Garde Exhibition at Prato’s Textile Museum

March 25, 2025 – Fashion Exhibition, “Velvet mi Amor” at Prato’s Textile Museum

The Museo del Tessuto in Prato, Italy celebrates its 50th anniversary with a groundbreaking exhibition, Velvet mi Amor. A showcase dedicated to the innovative use of velvet in contemporary fashion. Running from March 8 to June 8, 2025, the exhibition presents an installation of 24 anthropomorphic figures, crafted from velvet, and displayed for the first time in a museum setting.

The Velvet mi Amor exhibition highlights the creative experimentation in textile design, creating a fascinating journey through the material’s versatile applications in modern fashion. Curated by Stefano and Corinna Chiassai, a duo known for pushing creative boundaries in fashion consultancy. This show brings 24 futuristic, alien-inspired figures to life, flipping the script on velvet. Draped in avant-garde designs, these figures twist the fabric into new forms, manipulations, and daring combinations.

Exploring Velvet’s Evolution

The installation pulls back the curtain on velvet’s transformation. It’s a glimpse into the manual processes and technical experiments behind the magic. Laser treatments, inlays with other materials, optical illusions, manual weaving, pleating—each technique pushes velvet into new realms. The result? A fabric with endless creative potential.

But it’s not just velvet. Satin, poplin, gabardine, moleskin, and denim also make an appearance, each manipulated to mimic velvet’s rich texture. With its futuristic designs, Velvet mi Amor flips the script on how textiles shape fashion. It challenges you to rethink the possibilities.
